The first part or dose of this 3-part series, “Best Practices: The Ultimate Guide to Content Creation (Part 1),” was devoted to defining and explaining the meaning of best practices.
We’re going to take that discussion to its next level by looking at those elements that make up the content creation best practices.
Let’s get started!
Best Practices: The Ultimate Guide to Content Creation (Part 2): What are Those Best Practices for Content Creation?
Those best practices, which I prefer to call “The Ultimate Guide to Content Creation,” include the following:
Know Your Audience
There’s an adage that says, “You can’t be everything to everybody,” meaning that it is impossible for you to please everyone or fulfill every expectation that different people may have of you.

Of truth, trying to meet the needs or expectations of every individual is an unattainable goal.
The reason being that each person has his/her own preferences, desires, and needs, which can sometimes conflict with each other or with your own capabilities.
This adage also applies to content creation.
How?
No single content can satisfy every audience.
Because of these individual differences, it is, therefore, advisable that you understand who your target audience is, their preferences, interests, and pain points, as this will guide the type of content you create for your audience and how you present it to your audience.
Understanding the exact content that resonates with your specific audience is critical to your success as a content creator.
It is not a must that everybody on earth must read or like your content; all you need is to identify your right audience or those that are most likely to like your content and tailor your content to suit their purpose and meet their needs.
That is what should matter to you most. Focusing precisely on the content that speaks to your target audience would bring about a win-win situation for you and your audience.
Focus on Quality, Rather Than Quantity
In 1996, the American software guru and billionaire, Bill Gates, wrote an essay titled “Content is King,” where he discussed the future direction of the Internet and its potential to revolutionize media consumption. In that essay, Mr. Gates highlighted the significance of content in driving the success of the Internet.

He predicted that as the Internet continued to evolve, the most critical factor determining the success of online ventures would be the quality and relevance of the content they offered.
He emphasized that in the digital age, where information could be easily accessed, the focus would shift to valuable and engaging content to capture users’ attention.
The concept “content is king” underscores the idea that compelling, high-quality content holds immense power in attracting and retaining an audience.
Whether it’s articles, videos, images, podcasts, or any form of media, valuable content serves as the primary driver for user engagement, website traffic, and ultimately, business success in the online realm.
Since then, this phrase has become a fundamental principle in digital marketing, content creation, and online business strategies.
The famous essay emphasizes the importance of creating valuable, relevant, and engaging content that meets the needs and interests of the target audience, thereby building a loyal following and driving success in the online space.
Since then, the situation has not changed.
Therefore, always focus on creating high-quality content rather than churning out a large volume of mediocre content just for the sake of creating content.
This is because quality content engages audiences and builds credibility.
Plan Your Content-Creation Strategy

It is said that “those who fail to plan, plan to fail.”
If you don’t want to fail, which I know you can’t wish yourself, make sure to plan your content-creation strategy.
Develop a content calendar or plan outlining what type of content you’ll create for your target audience, when the content will be published, and on which platforms it would be published for your audience to see it.
Be Consistent with Your Content Creation
Creating content once in a blue moon may not help you achieve your content-creation goal. Rather, be consistent in doing this because consistency is key.
Being consistent in creating content can sometimes be a challenge because it is not every time that a content creator is inspired to create content.
What can a content creator do in this situation?
There’s no one-way answer to this question.

What I do personally, especially when the creative juice that spurs content-creation flows in me like a river, is to create as many high-quality contents as possible, so that I would have something to post when I’m not in the mood to create new or fresh content.
This is like saving enough money in your bank account when you have enough so that you can have something to fall back on when you don’t have enough.
Another thing I do, which works magic for me, is to carry a pen and paper anywhere I go, so that I can write down content ideas anytime they pop up in my head.
Instead of biting my pen and gazing at the roof, thinking of what to write, anytime I want to make a post, I simply go to the list of my content ideas and pick the idea that makes sense for the content I want to create.
What works for me may not work for you,
If it does, good; but if it doesn’t, do find out what works for you, and stick to it.
Be Helpful and Provide Value with Your Content
When people have a problem or challenge, they go all out to look for the real content that would take care of their problem or challenge, and nothing more.

So, whenever you sit down to create content for your audience, make sure it is something that is valuable and capable of providing them with the help that they need to overcome their problem or challenge.
Always avoid the temptation of creating content that would make them swear never to visit your platform again, because if that happens, your business becomes jeopardized.
Be Authentic, Be Original with Your Content
Some content creators, for reasons known best to them, go about copying and lifting other people’s content and presenting the content as their own.
What those content thieves fail to understand, in the words of Bob Marley, the reggae music legend, is that “you can fool some people sometimes, but you can’t fool all the people all the time.”
The point I’m trying to make here is that content consumers are intelligent enough to know when content is not real, authentic, or original.
To avoid losing your audience, make sure your content is always original and authentic, preferably from your head and from the work of your research.

When that happens, it becomes natural and easy for your audience to relate with you and to trust you.
All the popular content creators in the world, including bloggers and YouTubers, are famous because of the original and authentic content that they churn out for their audience.
Authenticity and originality help your content resonate with your audience, thereby setting your content apart in a crowded space.
In other words, when you create authentic and original content, you become memorable in the minds of your audience.
Make Use of Visually Appealing Multimedia Wisely
Multimedia refers to content that uses a combination of different forms of media such as text, audio, images, animations, videos, and interactive elements to convey information or entertainment.
It integrates various types of media into a cohesive presentation, allowing users to engage with information in a more dynamic and immersive way.
The components of multimedia work together to create a rich and interactive experience, enhancing communication and understanding through multiple sensory channels.

Examples of multimedia include websites, presentations, video games, educational materials, digital art, and more, where various media formats are combined to deliver a compelling and interactive user experience.
The Internet is a very busy community that is full of information, including advertisements.
One of the things you can do to make yourself noticeable in such a crowded environment is to always fuse your content with high-quality and eye-catching multimedia because people love pictures.
However, you’re advised to use them wisely because too much of everything, they say, is BAD.
Engage With Your Audience for Effective Results
In the early days of the Internet, creators created content and threw it at their perceived audience without their audience having the opportunity to interact with the creators.
That era of darkness and one-way traffic is gone!

Today is the day of interaction where creators, who are worth their salt, love to interact with their audience, with a view to assessing the performance of their content, among other reasons.
Encourage your audience to interact with you and to send you their feedback, based on their consumption of your content.
Do make sure, on your part, to always respond to their comments, messages, and inquiries to build a community around your content.
Stay Updated, Be Adaptable
Information seekers always like current information.

Nobody likes stale information when they are aware of the existence of a new version of that information.
Based on this fact, it is advisable for you to always ensure your content is as timely and relevant as possible.
Always keep abreast of the trends in your industry, including changes in algorithms and new platforms, as they occur, and adapt your content strategy accordingly to stay relevant.
Write and Create Catchy Headlines or Titles
No matter how tasty a food may be, it might become useless if nobody gets to taste and eat it.
The same thing applies to content.
If you prepare the best content in the world and nobody reads or consumes it, all your effort in creating it would have been wasted.
“How do I get people to read my content?” you might ask.

One of the ways you can achieve this goal is by writing a catchy headline or title.
It is a catchy title that attracts people to an article and pulls them further into the main article.
It won’t be a bad idea, therefore, for you to learn how to write captivating headlines.
It is a skill on its own; learn it, do it, and eat it!
Learn SEO and Optimize Your Content for SEO
Learning SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is crucial for your content creation business as it would help your content rank better in search engine results, thereby boosting your online visibility and driving traffic to your website and other platforms.

You can start your journey into mastering SEO by understanding the basics of how search engines work, including keyword research, on-page optimization, and link building.
You can take this to a higher level by experimenting with various tools and resources available online and staying updated with the ever-evolving SEO landscape to effectively enhance website ranking and reach a broader audience.
Practice implementing SEO strategies consistently to see tangible results over time.
Don’t Sell in Every Content You Create

There’s nothing wrong with you talking about your product in your content but resist the temptation of talking about your product in every content that you create.
Falling prey to this temptation may cause your audience to see you as an opportunist who always wants to reap without sowing.
The safest way to beat such a destructive temptation is to always create purposeful and useful content that addresses the pain points of your audience.
When your audience begins to trust you and your brand, they might even be the ones to ask if you have a product that would solve their problems or challenges.
Measure and Analyze
Use analytics tools like A/B testing to track the performance of your content, and what works and what doesn’t, to enable you to adjust your strategy based on the data.

Refining your content creation strategy, as regularly as possible, is key to keeping your online audience engaged.
Analyzing your content’s performance and making improvements, where necessary, and based on your findings will help ensure that you’re always delivering the best possible content.
A/B testing, also known as split testing, for your information, is a method used in marketing, product development, and user experience design to compare two versions of something (such as a webpage, app interface, marketing email, etc.) to determine which one performs better among the audience or users.
It is a valuable tool because it allows businesses and developers to make data-driven decisions by comparing specific changes and their impact on user behaviour or performance metrics.
It helps in optimizing websites, applications, marketing campaigns, and other user-facing elements to improve engagement, conversion rates, and overall success.
Improve. Improve. Improve
Content creation is a journey that takes time and practice to refine your skills and find what works best for you and your audience.

You must, therefore, learn to be open to feedback, learn from your mistakes, and consistently strive to improve, improve, and improve your skills and the quality of your content.
You can achieve this by staying passionate, and creative, and enjoying the process of crafting engaging and valuable content.
